Thank you; this is very -- dare I say, enlightening? I felt there was more depth to this movie, but hadn't teased out where it was. It just held together much better thematically.

I am very dubious about Abrams. He has actually no narrative sense at all as far as I can see; he just likes to do pretty moments one after the other. And I don't feel that he respects his material. He certainly did not in the Star Trek reboots; and although he's said that he only did those so that he could go on to do Star Wars, which he loves, I'm not sure he really gets Star Wars either.
