It's funny, I've lived here all my life but I don't think I've ever seen a giant redwood while knowing what it was. On the other hand, I've grown up with eucalyptus and it's terribly strange to read an account in which eucalyptus is exotic. (When I was a kid we thought that we could repel mosquitoes by rubbing the leaves of eucalyptus saplings on our skin. Didn't work terribly well.)
Probably rather few of those apartment buildings really had swimming pools in them.
