Yes, first person is absolutely a special case of dialogue, and should be treated very differently from other choices of viewpoint. What did boggle me about going through this copy edit was the number of usages that, while in third person, were also essentially special cases of dialogue and should also be treated differently.
Your process sounds like an efficient version of mine. This made me laugh and laugh.
And yes, I know perfectly well that I am not being attacked, and neither is my work. Most of what got me so exercised was just queries. The text had not been touched. There was just an inquiry. But somehow it really gets inside one's defenses.
