Scilla are here, what happened to Charybdis?

When I tried to get the photos off my phone, the laptop told me that my old device didn't work with USB 3.0, try a USB 2 port. David, applied to for a sanity check, said that was nonsense. When he tried to get the photos off my phone, they came right off meekly. The phone used to be his; perhaps it has some attachment issues.

It's the time of year when one wants to visit the Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden as often as possible. Photos below the cut.



This is snow trillium. Eric and I saw it for the first time last year; it's much earlier than the trout lilies and bloodroot, and the weather didn't always permit the garden to be open, or invite us to go to it if it was open, early enough.



This is a larger patch of snow trillium.



These are the leaves of trout lilies.



These are the emerging leaves of, I think, Virginia waterleaf.



And here, because I can, are Saffron and Cassie, with bonus stripes.

How beautiful, all of it. The little trillium is so pretty. And the trout lilies! So much fun to find a patch if you're out on a walk. As for Saffron and Cassie, they look most stately and regal with their bonus sunlight stripes.

I've been going out for years during the spring specifically to see ephemerals, and never saw the little trillium til last year. It probably wouldn't grow well in my yard, but it would be lovely with the snowdrops. Sadly, one has to go to a park to find trout lilies; I've never seen them just growing around. They might do that further north; you can find orchids in the ditches if you go far enough.

Usually Cass is winsome and Saf regal, but yes, Cassie has managed to look quite remote and elegant just here.

I'll try to get photos of the larger-flowered ones later on. Eloise Butler has red ones as well as several kinds of white -- large-flowered and nodding, I think.

These particular cats are very awww. I think they took lessons somewhere.

We went to Eloise Butler on Easter Sunday. All we saw blooming were the hepatica. Love those trout lily leaves. Also, a big pileated woodpecker deigned to drum away on a tree in easy viewing distance.

Today in the neighborhood I saw a heron fly over. Yay!

We have had such bad luck with the pileated woodpeckers for some years now. I'm glad you got to see one. We have seen great horned owls, wild turkeys, and a barred owl in the Quaking Bog, preening itself before its nightly hunt and perfectly indifferent to our presence. But no pileated woodpeckers for quite a while. Other hikers are always telling us of them excitedly, but they aren't there when we arrive.

I'm very happy the herons are back. It definitely marks spring.

I did take some photos of hepatica, but they weren't very good.

Someone on our block has a lawn full of blue scilla right now, which is an impressive jolt of much needed color each spring.

Those trilliums are wonderful. So are the trout lily leaves. We have trout lilies blooming here, as they do every year for trout season.

Your cats are every bit as majestic as cats usually are.

They're native to North America and Asia, but I guess not to the British Isles or Europe. And they don't really do that well in ordinary gardens as a rule.

I'll be sure to put up photos of the larger ones when they flower. Those little ones are especially cunning, but their big cousins are also lovely.

They are the best cats.

The trout lilies are just starting to bloom. Those photos are from last weekend; we just did another visit, and both white and yellow trout lilies are blooming in the sunniest spots.

The majestic poses are just a show, but they do look pretty splendid, I admit.

Apparently they don't grow as far north as Alaska, either! I don't even think I knew they were real flowers. The only time I've ever heard of them is in the Norton/Bradley/May BLACK TRILLIUM books. :)

It looks very different this time of year. I'll see if the landscape photos are worth putting up.

The cats are indeed gorgeous; we are lucky. We actually did choose them for their personalities; we had no idea just how fancy Cass was just from her adoption photo.

Such nice trilliums. I've never seen that sort, but they're some of my favorite flowers back home. I should make a point of finding out which ones are here.

When I visited on April 2 one small patch of snow trillium were already blooming as were a few hepatica. I wandered about the uplands hoping to see Pasque flowers, but couldn't find any...I'm sure they're there but the remains of last year's grasses are hard to sort through. Also saw a pileated woodpecker swooping through like a jet; it did manage to land on a branch instead of beak-first into a trunk.

Lovely! The flowers are FINALLY starting to think about making an appearance here, after the winterthatwouldnotdie, but I haven't seen much of anything other than pansies and forsythia.
