I have seen Great Horned Owlets a little further along, when the orange feathers were starting to come in around the eyes but the majority of the owlet is still a mass of fluff. It gives a very distinct "when I'm old enough, I am coming over there and removing your face, and then you won't think I'm cute" look.
Best bird so far this spring was the calling killdeer going over in the dark before dawn, its white underside glowing and ghostly in the streetlights. We got snow after that day, so wherever that killdeer was going, I hope it made it through to these warm days at least.
I am hoping to improve that next weekend -- there's a bird walk out the length of Tommy Thompson Park -- but having read this I am going to be paying much more attention to the possibility of flowers.
