Having missed Thursday night and being in the process of missing Fish After, I feel my Minicon was very much compressed. Like many compressed things, however, it was very springy and energetic when released.

I want to apologize to every single person to whom I complained about protein. I knew that Minicon is not generally vegan-friendly in a "You can eat out of the con suite all weekend" way, I knew I couldn't afford to go out to eat a lot, and I knew how I get. I should have put soymilk creamer, a block of soy cheese, and some of that baked tofu stuff into a cooler and lugged it along. Many many many thanks to Jon Singer for producing, as a rabbit out of a hat, a block of soy cheese on Sunday evening for me to wolf down as others were wolfing down the smoked duck.

I had a grand time, and wanted to thank everybody who worked so hard to let me do so. My work was confined to appearing on panels and never telling Mary Kay that I had nothing to say. I did miss my own autographing, after scheduling it myself (this was not an aberration, it's just that this was being done at the last minute for everybody), but luckily my name didn't make it onto the sign at the actual table, so nobody knew. Why I'm telling the world now I am not entirely sure.

The "lovely treats" component of the food available, as opposed to the "basic for mainenance" component, was excellent. People attended programming and had opinions. There was music, there were unexpected appearances of people out of the past, there were new people. My editor was a GoH and lost no opportunity to make me blush. I loved Walter Jon Williams's GoH speech, vowed to go to his panels, and missed every single one of them. Even though the number of attendees was small, there were people present whom I never saw, or saw only on one day and never again. (While sometimes frustrating, I think this is one measure of the goodness of a convention, or at least any convention with more than thirty attendees.)

I don't think karaoke is really a fannish activity, or maybe it is just not a convention activity, but I suppose it had to be tried.

I helped Mike celebrate his birthday, got to watch my editor's boyfriend crack up utterly at his first Ask Dr. Mike, sat next to Elise at dinner and stole her calamari, watched a longing remark made by Peg in the direction of a necklace transformed instantly into a project that had its fulfillment in less than six hours; talked to very old friends and met [livejournal.com profile] lcohen (a completely delightful experience). I had a late-night Silly Conversation in the con suit with Minnehaha B and L and Laurel and Kevin and Shaun. It was a convention.

I'm going to go eat tofu now.
