Late pruning, essentially. You're not supposed to prune this kind of rose in this kind of climate at this time of year. Well, it has to be done. I didn't get to it at the proper time, and really and truly, the first time I tried to mow that part of the lawn, the rose bush grabbed me by the hair and tried to drag me off to its cave.
I hope the expedients recommended by my book on growing roses organically -- dipping the pruning shears in a ten percent bleach solution, and painting white glue over the cuts in live branches afterwards -- will suffice.
I don't really believe that any disease or fungus could get a foothold on that bush anyway.
