We have cat days. I do not use the cat-length thermometer, since its results are compromised by the existence of a couple of window air conditioners. There is a cat-position thermometer, though. Also a cat-flatness thermometer. The most interesting is the position one, which infallibly demonstrates where cool air is flowing on the floor, and never mind those pesky people who think it's more important that they get to use a particular hallway or staircase.

I am glad this awful weather has been so long delayed, but it's going to make packing Eric's stuff rather more difficult than it need be. The long-range forecast, for the last few days and the cleaning, looks more civilized, but I haven't got a lot of faith in long-range forecasts.

I wrote another 450 words on the Whim/Hills sequel. I had to name the directory something, so I called it "north." We'll see.

Am starting to have structural thoughts about the Liavek novel and wondering if certain characters should be introduced earlier.

Outside everything is dry and crunchy. Oh dear, I had better go out right now and turn off the trickle of water I turned on last night for the huge mock-orange. The water bill can only take so much.

We have two window air conditioners. Last year they were both in the upstairs (in the master bedroom and the guest room), which made for an interesting temperature gradient in the stairway.

I could judge how hot Lennon thought it was by which step he decided to curl up on.

This year we put one of them in the living room; it happens to be aimed more or less directly at the cat tree. Which means that when he doesn't feel like playing with the gradient on the steps he tends to sit on top of the cat tree and radiate a most positive smug.

I've got two dog-shaped thermometers- the Lola-shaped version is always accurate to the coolest point which can be reached in our house (usually under the window with a curtain over her head) but the Piper-shaped is utterly hopeless, as she's much more worried about the point in the house where someone who will touch her is located.

The late, lamented Jezebel was better than any thermometer. When it got above 80 degrees, she'd invariably flatten herself out *in the bathtub.*

Taught me not to reach in and turn the shower on without opening the curtains, I'll tell you.

I wish I could send you some of ours. I believe I've lost (or at least severely compromised) all the roses except the rugosas and the New Dawn hybrids. Even the supposedly VDR (very disease resistant) Old Roses aren't going to get much older if we don't get some sun soon. The daylilies however are my consolation... must buy more.

We have dogs at both ends of the spectrum mini-dachshund... she sun bathes in even the worst heat and two keeshonds, who prefer frolicing in the snow. Me I'm getting so that my comfort zone seems to have narrowed quite a bit as I gotten older. My goal being to find a place with the maximum amount of days around 65 degrees per year.

The trees really need it, though.

As far as I can tell, his sole opinion of temperature leads him to occasional moments of cathermometry, but for the most part he doesn't care, so long as there are people (read: me) to snuggle with.

It has not yet been sufficiently warm that he would pass up the opportunity to nestle.
