ETA: All right, we seem to have dodged that bullet. I am going to bed, and some of you probably should as well. Thanks for the company.

You may all laugh now. I actually let HCMC talk me into trying the same prep again, only they added an anti-nausea drug to help me get the vile electrolyte fluid down. I changed pharmacies for the prescriptions so that I could be sure of getting the flavor packets, too, since I knew that that taste of the unflavored stuff would do me in at once.

The anti-nausea drug worked for two liters' worth and then wore off in a flash. The flavor packets were vile, but did taste different. However, I stuck at two liters. I could not do more. I decided I'd just keep to the regimen of clear liquids for the rest of the day, take the laxative tablets at the proper time, drink lots of fluids, and see if they thought I was well enough prepared for the procedure.

Right on schedule at around midnight, I started shaking hard, and my pulse rate went up. I drank some juice and a great deal of water, flagrantly breaking the rule about when to stop drinking stuff, but things didn't get better, so I called, reluctantly, the GI nurse on call. She turned out to be the person whom I'd talked to when I made the new appointment, who talked me into trying the prep again. She was chagrined and apologetic and very nice to me. She said that despite all the outward signs being propitious, two liters really was not enough, and she didn't think that I should be put in the ER again on the small chance that my system passed stuff along a lot faster than most people's. So she canceled the appointment for me, and I am regaling myself on toast and pomegranate juice.

I hope we can nip this in the bud so I don't land in the ER anyway. At least, with luck, if I do, they'll decide they don't have to do eleventy-one tests to make sure nothing scary is happening, since they just did them last month, and it wasn't. But I hope I can just not go there in the first place.

I am NOT going to do this again.

Now I am off to drink water and juice and anything else I can think of, barring, unfortunately, alcohol.

If anybody else is up this late, I do hope it's for better reasons. Nobody is to worry. Raphael is up with me, and I will certainly go to the ER, complaining loudly, if it seems indicated.

Pamela

I'm up for better reasons - it's midafternoon where I am - but I reserve the right to worry a bit anyway. I'm very glad you are in good company, though.

Hey, any colonoscopy prep that doesn't land you in the ER is a success, whether it results in an actual colonoscopy or not, to my way of thinking. :)

Glad they cancelled you. I hope you feel better.

I am up because it's a bit of a white night, but I am v glad Raphael is up with you and hope v much you don't have to go to the ER (also I do not think anyone is going to laugh at you, man. If I remembered the remedial Greek for "doctors give you that which is good for you and tastes bad" I would quote it. I think all of us are pretty much culturally programmed to try to suck it up and bull through various medical procedures).

I hope you are better!

Ugh. Glad it sounds like no ER trip will be necessary; also cool that the nurse was apologetic under the circumstances. And of course it's nice that Raphael is there with you.

I've been talked into trying things like this again myself more times than I care to admit.

I'm up because, um, I haven't been sleeping much. Supposedly am working on TV picks, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Eeek! (((((HUGS))))) Take care, and kiss R. for me.

My mother is facing a 'scope and is putting it off. I'm going to have to insist she do it next week, but it won't be easy. She has a similar problem, but she has that shortened colon from having had surgery on it before, so when she *goes* . . . well, it's not fun. With her low blood sugar issues, she has problems with trembling and weakness. Ick!

But thank goodness for modern medicine, anyway. Stinky as it is.

The pineapple flavor, I am told, at least for the stuff Mama has to drink, is the least gross. The orange flavor is icky, she says, and she can't drink it.

I had a colonoscopy last year. The test itself was nothing. I was out cold, and then the drugs wore off quickly but I still got the day off work. The prep? NASTY.

I can only hope that they come up with some less vile concoction before I have to have the next test, 9 years from now.

(When I read recently that Bush had a colonoscopy, my immediate thought was, "I hope the prep solution was even nastier for him than it was for me." That's how much I hate him.)

This is ridiculous. There must be a better way to do this. I would gladly fast for, say, three days, and take purgatives of various sorts, to avoid this--and I didn't have near as much trouble as you did.

My deepest sympthies on your bad experience. I have REFUSED to have a colonoscopy several times because of hearing stories like yours. I do the occult blood smear every year instead. Unless you have symptoms or specific risk factors, you might want to ask about doing that.

Gahh. Much sympathy from both me and J! I'm glad you took such a cautious approach on this attempt, and were able to avoid the full misery you went through on the first go-round -- but sorry this was still such an unpleasant experiment.

Now, eat, drink, [rest,] and be merry! For today there shall be no colonoscopy! :-)

Sorry to hear of your unfortunate adventures.

My GI docs had me drink the gallon of goo the first couple of times I
did colonoscopies.

I decided the flavor packets can make it worse.

I tried putting the flavor in each glassful, rather than in the jug, so I could change flavor
every glass.

I tried using chilled water instead of room temperature.

One time, I got the stuff from the drug store, then went to CostCo and
bought the pallet-sized unit of their softest toilet paper, and the new Harry Potter
book. There, I declared, I'm ready for my prep!

I think I finally decided it was better to try to drink the gallon of goo as fast as I could
- within one hour is my best time - rather than stage it out.

But I never liked the gallon of goo.

Then my GI doc switched to a different prep. Gone was the gallon of goo. In its place
are two small bottles of Fleet prep, which get mixed to any convenient clear liquids.
Even uncolored juice or ginger ale! Yay! You still have to drink a lot of liquid, but it's
a lot more pleasant.

Unfortunately, there aren't any new Harry Potter books to look forward to, but I can cope.

---

Next installment - the last two times I've had colonoscopies, I've declined the sedation.
It's a lot faster, I can drive myself home, and I don't lose the rest of the day. On the
downside, they don't delete the sedation cost from the bill, and they wouldn't give it to me
in a doggie bag for some future use of my choosing...

---
I hope you feel better soon, and everything gets resolved.

If you don't like the flavors the bowel prep solution comes with, you can use any flavor of Crystal Light that you prefer (the non-calcium/fiber kind, obviously). That's what we pharmacists used to suggest before they started coming out with the flavor packets. You can also ask if you can put some sugar in it--that shakiness sounds to me like a low blood sugar problem.

I usually suggest patients mix the product a day before they have to drink it. Fill it up about 1/3 of the way with tap, shake well to dissolve, then top it off, another shake, and chill. It's best to drink quick glasses, not sip it--about one 8oz glass every 5-10 minutes. I've never had it, though one person told me it tastes kind of "slick." I'm sure it's unpleasant.

If you suspect one of the other ingredients might be the problem, do a trial of them one day (preferably on a day you'll want to be home--like a snow day).

Finally, there are other options, though your insurance may not pay for them, or they may be equally unpleasant. If you need to, seek out a specialist.

My husband goes in for one on Monday. He is going to forgo sedation because he doesn't like what those drugs do to him. Weirdness is, we both had one five years ago. His was fine, but mine had a polyp, yet he is the one that has to have one five years later and I don't need one for 10 years.

Anyway, I hope your doctor finds some alternative to get the same answers. I understand there are virtual procedures now. Whatever, stay well!

And a little charitable commercial (Pam, please delete this if you don't want it here):

I'm on the board of a small non-profit charity that raises money for colorectal cancer research. We're all volunteers and all money that's raised except for our minimal costs and the $500 we keep in the banking account all the time goes to the National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance.

Beading For a Cure came about when a friend of ours died of undiagnosed colorectal cancer. We sell bead kits (all alike, you'll see the rules on the site) once a year. The participants make the kits into jewelry and other fabulous things (look at the Gallery 2008) and we auction them on eBay. Our first auctions start March 2nd and the last auctions end the first Sunday of May. We're skipping Easter because last year I set the time wrong when I scheduled them while I was at Minicon. I'm the auctioneer; I'll put them all up at 3pm on Sundays. You can check which items are being auctioned when by clicking on the Auctions button. Last year we were able to give $2600 to NCCRA and we'd like to give more this year.

Please check out the gallery and if there's anything you like, bid on it when it's up!

colonoscopy prep pills

There's a pill form of colonoscopy prep out now called osmoprep. My mom had a colonoscopy 3 months ago and took the pills instead of the liquid stuff. She said it was a lot of pills to take, but she was able to drink just water and gatorade to get them down. No nasty tasting stuff. She doesn't like to take pills either, but she said it was better than the alternative. Here are a couple of sites that talks about them

Those are sodium phosphate, that would kill me and it's not safe for Pam. From the second site:

OsmoPrep Tablets (sodium phosphate monobasic monohydrate, USP, and sodium phosphate dibasic anhydrous, USP) are indicated for cleansing of the colon as a preparation for colonoscopy in adults 18 years of age or older. Considerable caution should be advised before OsmoPrep Tablets are used in patients with severe renal insufficiency, congestive heart failure, ascites, unstable angina, gastric retention, ileus, acute obstruction or pseudo-obstruction of the bowel, severe chronic constipation, bowel perforation, acute colitis, toxic megacolon, gastric bypass or stapling surgery, or hypomotility syndrome. Use with caution in patients with impaired renal function, patients with a history of acute phosphate nephropathy, known or suspected electrolyte disturbances (such as dehydration), or people taking drugs that affect electrolyte levels. Patients with electrolyte abnormalities such as hypernatremia, hyperphosphatemia, hypokalemia, or hypocalcemia should have their electrolytes corrected before treatment with OsmoPrep Tablets.

Программа для раскрутки групп и профилей В контакте - Viking Botovod

* По критериям
* По возможным друзьям
* Из группы
* По списку id
