Pies Redux
Dec. 24th, 2008 11:39 pmThe pies were very meek this time, and did not leap out of the oven or require baking twice as they did at Thanksgiving. I was trying to think of the opposite of "Pies of Doom," as I titled that entry, but "Pies of Salvation" is a little too serious for me. In any case, two vegan pumpkin, one mincemeat. We also made a large pan of roasted cauliflower with garlic and lemon. Tomorrow David and Eric and I will take several bags of presents, the cauliflower, the pies, a good supply of empty refrigerator dishes, and ourselves over to my mother's house, where we will make and eat dinner with my mother, my brother, David's sister, and her partner. There will be one feline observer, and with luck a lot of birds at the feeder.
A very merry Christmas to those of you who celebrate it. I wish I could give you all something, wrapped in the Audubon paper with the birds and their names on it.

Date: 2008-12-28 12:11 am (UTC)A pie that ends our woe!
A pie that tells of triumph
Against our vanquish'd foe!
Yield, summer's brightest sunrise,
To this December morn:
Lift up your gates, ye ovens
And let the Pies be born!

Date: 2008-12-25 04:59 pm (UTC)One of my very earliest memories (we moved out of that house on my fifth birthday) was of my mother taking one of her prized lemon meringue pies out of the oven, and slipping and dropping it. Just where it would hit the edge of the open oven door to flip over and land face-down on the floor.
classic!
