I had meant to include these in my previous entry, but I have book-brain.

con_or_bust is collecting money to send fans of color who want to go to Wiscon but can't quite see their way to paying for it, to Wiscon.

verb_noire is the LJ community for a startup small press that will publish stories that have a person of color and/or who is LGBT as the protagonist. Here is the entry with the Donate button; other entries contain updates and submissions guidelines.

Both of these projects are among the better results of RaceFail09, and worthy of support. I know that times are not just hard but scary, and I don't want to make anybody feel guilty. But if you have a bit to spare and think these causes good, there are the links.

A few reservations, but we Choctaw like them

I'll contribute to the con fund tomorrow, assuming the Friday $$ comes in. I hope this works out! I don't remember seeing many people of color at ANY con, not even Hispanic/Latino people here at Texas cons--though there were a few Latinas, if I remember correctly, down at Armadillocon some time ago. I really hope that it works out *once they're there*, as I have been kind of uneasy at a lot of cons myself . . . for various reasons. I mean, the person who's a newbie feels weird enough without knowing they're "the representative of African Americans" or what-the-hell-ever, you know? So, anyway, I shall keep a VERY positive thought for this situation. I think it'll be good, but the worst would be if some kind of RaceFail incident were to happen . . . egad, disaster. And if everyone's tippytoeing around, then it'll feel weird, too.

It's kind of a no-win deal, now that I think about it. But I shall hope! This WILL WORK . . . WILL WORK.

Wiscon is somewhat less white than many conventions, and is often cited as being less clueless about the whole issue, as well. So I think there's hope. People of color already attend, and the fund is for more than one person, so nobody should feel too singled out. Or so one hopes.
