My relationship with her fiction is complex, though when I love it, I love it madly. But oh, the essays, the eye-opening, mind-opening, heart-opening essays. I cherish those, and always will. May she have many happy returns of the day.

I like her essays too

And I like the way the Earthsea books totally switched gears with Tehanu (there was a twenty year gap I think). I like ALL the Earthsea books.

Nope.

I can readily see how it wasn't what people were expecting, but I thought :Tehanu: was a good book as a book.

I first read Language of the Night from the public library when I was about 12, and that remains a really special book for me.

I want to be Ursula K. LeGuin when I grow up. Probably not possible, but one can always hope...

As far as Tehanu goes, all her work grew more focused on women. And her style changed. In the Earthsea saga it's fascinating what this does to the way the world is constructed. It's reconstructionist. Her feminism can be just a tad self concious, which may be what irritates some people, but it suits me. The dead jumping over the wall at the end *spoiler* and so forth could never have happened within just the context of the first three books. I like all of Le Guin's books. There's not a one I don't like.
