Nodding in

I went to the Fourth Street Fantasy Convention, where I had a perfectly splendid time. My only real regret, other than arkuat's inability to attend and the fact that I need eight hours of sleep, is that skzb has apparently joined the list of former Minneapolitans whom I still treat as if they lived in town and I could see them any time, even though when they are not present I have been known to bemoan their absence. I don't know what is wrong with my brain. Anyway, it was a wonderful convention.

On the Tuesday thereafter, Raphael and I finally managed to go to Itasca. We had cancelled two previous attempts because of bad weather. We had a splendid time of a completely different nature, involving a great many dragonflies, hermit thrushes, red-eyed vireos, red pines, lakes, biting flies, the infant Mississippi, the occasional suicidal deer, and a surprising number of loons.

I am hopelessly behind on everything, but am using the beastly-hot weather as an excuse to catch up on LJ rather than do anything productive. Well, some of the laundry from the trip, redolent of DEET, lemon eucalyptus insect repellent, and sunscreen, is in the washer, so that's a kind of passive productivity.

I hope to have something more resembling actual thought here soon.

Fourth Street, and your post

You are someone who lives in town and whom I could see at any time, and it's been so long since you and I have sat down and talked that I can't even remember how long. I saw you Friday night, but as you know, we did not speak. I had an enjoyable time too (Peggy O'Neill had called me in the hopes that I could help get/keep the music going -- I did). As far as catching up on LJ in beastly hot weather -- isn't that bad for your computer? (Note that I have a large and effective cooling unit here in my office.)

I was very glad to catch some of your music-making on Friday, but yes, that means both of us were busy not having a conversation.

I have an air conditioner in my office, but the house as a whole is not air-conditioned. Therefore I am huddling in here with the computer rather than doing the work I need to do. My postponed tasks are things like housework in unairconditioned areas, yard work (no way!), and digging around in boxes of papers for things that might be of interest to an archivist. This will all have to wait.

I saw a sort of dragonfly convention when I went down the lakes today (that's southphillyspeak for "went down to FDR park"). They were just out of telephoto range, but it looked like a couple dozen of them. I thought of you.

I see dragonflies almost every day, and like Laura, they make me think of you.

I wish they ate tomato worms.
