This is motley and peculiar, but it's what I've got. I was shocked to hear of Jim's death. Whatever age he was, it always seemed he was a young one of those.

I was in complete awe of Jim when I met him. He was a whirlwind of wit and nonsense and sudden sharp analysis; you never knew which side he would show you. And half the in-jokes and catch-phrases that I was learning as a new member of the Minnesota Scientifiction Society had come from his teeming brain.

Later, he published a science fiction novel. I don't know why, but he felt, at least at one point, that it was just awful. He begged me not to read it. He had a very expressive face and he looked terribly pained at the mere mention of this novel. So we bought it, David and I, but I never read it. I never read the second one, either, though no geas was laid upon me about that one.

Later still when he came back to Minneapolis for visits we had a few snippets of conversation. He was still funny and whimsical, and had become immensely kind.

David has done a collection of photos here. Friends of Mike Ford, be warned, there's an exceptionally fine one of Jim and Mike on a Minicon panel, both with extremely typical expressions.

I hope Mike is showing him around now. Though really, alas, the competition to do so is probably quite fierce.
