Here's the link for pre-ordering Points of Departure, Patricia Wrede's and my Liavek collection (all of our old stories reprinted with a few corrections; a new story, "Of Fish and Fools," by Pat; and a new story, "Shards," by both of us), coming from Diversion Books in May. It looks as if, should you want a paper book rather than an e-book, Amazon is your only option. [Edited to add: This is incorrect! In less exciting news, I finally got a Twitter account. My name in many variations was taken already (about what you might expect if you waited until 2015 to get a Twitter account), so I ended up as pamelacdean. This has led to enough thoughts like, "Pamelac! A cooking spray AND an infant formula!" that I may need to change it. I have not posted anything and am following people as they pop up, so very desultory all around, but I hope to get up to speed eventually.

Isn't that splendid? I am really very happy with Diversion Books. They did that cover, they consulted with us about it, their editorial behavior has been wonderful; and while I feel that their marketing language is rather highly-colored, that is not my department and I figure it's probably as good as everything else they do and hence excellent for its purpose.

Aargh. There's "marketing language", and there's not being able to distinguish between a squirrel and a chipmunk. I will allow that marketing language need not be so coloured as to mention that the chipmunk is blue. You will not reach your target market of chipmunk-lovers, while squirrel-lovers are sure to be disappointed.

Chipmunks are in the squirrel family.

However, I have pointed out the discrepancy to the publisher, remarking that Liavek fans are very tenacious of small details. Perhaps they can fix it.

I don't feel that it's necessary to mention that the chipmunk is blue. One must reserve SOME surprises.

I didn't know how closely related squirrels and chipmunks are until I went looking for "something-ophile" words. But to me they are quite different critters. Squirrels lost a lot of their "cute" factor for me when I was living in Kingston. The ones around the Queens U. campus looked very unhealthy: bedraggled, missing patches of fur, etc. ISTR that a couple had patches of differently-coloured fur. Rumour was that they nested in the vents from the chem buildings' fume hoods.

ETA: The Woman's Day Encyclopedia of Cookery's entry on "Squirrel" mentions only the grey and red (the former being superior). It reminds me bizarrely of the Giants' cookbook in The Silver Chair, though I know the similarity is supposed to be the other way around.

Yes, squirrels are both bigger and much pushier and more pugnacious than chipmunks. I am very fond of squirrels, even though they have caused us a lot of trouble over the years. Then again, mine are eating bird seed and leftover bagels from the bagel shop up the way, and do not have any fume hoods to nest in. They are clearly the creatures for whom the term "fat and sassy" was invented. There is one nesting stubbornly on top of Raphael's window air conditioner, however.
