For the moment the mother owl was occupying the "I will remove your face" niche, but I can certainly see that with adult facial markings more advanced, one would recognize it in a fluffball too.
I really like killdeer. I hope yours made it too. And I'm sure you'll enjoy your bird walk, but yes, it's a very good time for wildflowers if the environment isn't completely degraded -- and if it is, I guess it wouldn't be a great place for a bird walk anyway.
