I have had a couple of very unpleasant experiences with plumbing and tree roots (lots of water, and sewage backing up into the downstairs shower), and now I have someone from Ron the Sewer Rat come out once a year to ream the roots out prophylactically.
It costs about $125 per time, and is well worth it to me. Since then, then only incident I've had (necessitating an out-of-schedule visit) had nothing to do with tree roots.
