Pies and Parking

The pies were EPIC. The saltiness was much toned down after baking, the apple filling was amazing, and the less burnt parts of the crust were so good I might try this on purpose with a bit less salt and a lower baking temperature. Wow.

It is a song about Minneapolis' and St. Paul's winter parking rules. A song. With a section where they do a medley of the two sets of rules, which honestly is the best replication of how it actually feels to try to get around in the winter without ending up in the impound lot that I can think of. Also, the song includes the address of the impound lot.

Mmmmmm apple pie . . .

I so wish I could send you some. I'd meant to use Haralson apples, but the stores were out. So Granny Smith, half the recommended sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon. I forgot the margarine (I can't eat butter), but since I had to do a lattice top because the crust was so ill-behaved, I don't think it mattered.

For the first part of the St. Paul song, I was thinking the rules weren't as YIKES as I'd believed; but then I got to the part where there are no signs for the routes that are plowed during the day. P.

I am in awe of winter parking rules on account of we have the same rules all year in boring temperate Californ-aye-yay.

At some point during every plowing season, many Minnesotans will yearn for boring temperate California. Then they will tell the story of their relative or a friend's relative who moved to California or Florida and, one day, remarked, "Another goddamn beautiful day," hitched up their equivalent of a wagon, and went back home to Minnesota or Michigan. It is a ritual.

My mother has a slight variant: "Another goddamn day of sunshine." The "goddamn" is seldom omitted.

Their definition of "clear" is perhaps a little notional, but mostly it does get done.
