Much of last week was spent either having low blood pressure, suffering from the heat, or both. The remainder of the time was spent somewhat frantically cleaning up the house so that we could have a very small graduation party for Eric. He finds huge parties fun but felt it would be a bit overwhelming to be the guest of honor at one.

I was very pleased with the results of the cleaning. Having done a mort of work less than a month previously in order to host the Romance Exchange in something slightly less than squalor, I got to devote time in this instance to clearing out and scrubbing the back hall (since several guests were smokers and would need to pass that way to get to the back yard) and also, just because I felt like it, to clearing out and cleaning the front hall too, and washing the glass in the front-hall windows and in the front door. And I got a lot of the dead plants out of the sunroom and removed a bunch of junk so people could sit in there. (I saw two people doing so during the party, too; hooray.)

Christopher cleaned up the media room and hung some tapestries on the walls, which made an amazing difference to its appearance. That room was almost surplus to requirements in such a smal party, but Elise did take Eric and me in there at one point and read to us thrillingly from a historical document.

David helped me go buy lawn furniture, and Lydy got last-minute ice and sour cream that I'd forgotten; in addition to clearing their stuff out of the living and dining rooms.

The weather was perfect; the humidity had dropped to about 22% and the temperature into the seventies. I'd gotten citronella candles and a couple of kinds of insect repellent, and there was also a good breeze that kept the mosquitoes down pretty well.

Several of Eric's friends from outside Minn-Stf came, one of them bringing two delightful kids with her, and that was interesting. I was fairly exhausted and not feeling very sociable for much of the party, but I think I did okay. I did some garden tours and talked with Beth and Eileen about mystery novels. About once an hour, Eric came up to me and said, "Thank you for hosting this fabulous party for me."

Lydy got to show people her fish, and she let the kids bounce a bit on her waterbed when they got bored. I had a lot of fun showing Karen my rosebush, and Peg got inspired to get one of her own after I sang its praises.

My brother came and stayed until the very end, which pleased me a lot.

And after everyone had gone, Eric and I sat out in the new lawn chairs and looked at the sky, and he found that even the fainter stars in Lyra were visible.
