In an attempt to escape from the horrors of my beloved country's alleged foreign policy, I've been rereading Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe books. Partway into The Red Box I realized that there really is no escape, but at least Archie Goodwin has delivered the last word on the use of torture. Here it is:

"They say it works sometimes, but even if it does, how could you depend on anything you got that way? Not to mention that after you had done it a few times any decent garbage can would be ashamed to have you found in it."

Further commentary cut-tagged, since it's really redundant.

According to the ACLU, people who ought to be in search of a garbage can with no shame include that shining star of smart war management and sunny optimism, Donald Rumsfeld, and the indescribable George Bush himself.

I hope the sky falls down on them, the creepy bastards.

I have been reading and re-reading the Wolfe books since I was 10 years old. When I first began to read them I thought Archie was the coolest thing on earth and I could barely stand Wolfe. Now I really like Wolfe and can barely tolerate Archie -- mostly for his attitude towards women which I think is worse than Wolfe's. I have the Nero Wolfe Cookbook, but I've never cooked anything from it -- too intimidating.
