I can't actually recall why I friends-locked the previous message, except that I was freaked out. For those just joining us now, I experienced a sudden uprush in the number of floaters in my vision, so I arranged to go down to the eye clinic and have them check for retinal detachment.

No retinal detachment. Peripheral vitreal detachment, "a natural part of aging." When I hear that phrase I reach for my revolver; I mean to say, rather, I want to go do research to see if it is really true; but leave that for now. This event increases the risk of the other scarier condition, but it would still be rare for me to end up with it. I liked the eye doctor. He did say that since "eyes tend to be the same age," which cracked me up completely, that I might experience a similar detachment in the other eye, and if so I would need to come back in to make sure that this too was not anything serious.

Also, they checked for glaucoma and the pressures are fine, and my seven-year-old expensive bifocal prescription is still good.

I will stop tying now because I can't actually see the screen very well because of the eye-dilating drops, and I have to get ready for Minicon. See some of you there.

Thanks to everybody for the kind thoughts, including those of you who (as I so often do) did not post a comment because it's so hard to get the words right.

Thank you for posting. Sounds like you did see a good doctor. (Good and also good to talk to.)

oooooh! I had one of those (peripheral vitreous) back in 1985. 20 years later, I haven't had anything further strange happen. I hope that you have a similarly uneventful history with yours.

I'm glad to hear that. I actually attempted to post a comment then, but was foiled by an LJ glitch.

That would be me...but I was trying to send good vibes. (That and fighting some depression due to it being a year from Katherine Lawrence's one way journey.)

Life after peripheral vitreal detachment

I've had that in both eyes -- about a year apart, about three years ago. Second time was in daylight, and the initial event made part of my field of view shimmer, like a force-field, or maybe an alternate dimension trying to break through. No such luck.

Since then, lots of floaters -- like looking at life through a poorly kempt fishtank. Flashing arcs at the periphery when you move your head/eyes at night (as in, clearing behind you before backing up) -- indicative of small detachments still taking place.

I have been told that "most" of the floaters will go away "eventually". We seem to be talking geologic timescales here, but they do seem to drift out of the line of sight. Be prepared for annual visits to the friendly opther.

Thus doth entropy degrade us all, and with it, new emergent properties that come unlooked for, and changed dynamics that would'st block our every attempt at friendly basins of attraction.

Obviously because you didn't want Bush, Congress, & various other busy-bodies jumping in if they disagreed with whatever treatment you decided on... ;-)
