No, no, no.

The fiscally-irresponsible, morally-bankrupt, torture-loving, Constitution-shredding Republican Party has chosen the Twin Cities for its horrible national convention. May the earth open up and swallow the lot of them.

If you're a Republican and I hurt your feelings, that's a pity, but you should take a very hard look at your party. It does not deserve your support.

I am not entertaining the usual remarks like, "But the Democrats do or don't this or that" at this time. Just don't bother. I've never deleted a comment before, but I can sure learn how to. The Democrats have a horde of flaws, but their sins are secondary. I didn't want them here either; the national conventions are horrific impositions upon people trying to live their lives. But at least I wouldn't want to vomit every time I thought about it, if it were the Democrats.

UPDATE: Whoops, sorry, here's the link:

People in St. Paul, I'm very sorry, but it's going to be at the Xcel Energy Center. How appropriate. *snarl*

Yipes. Rioting in Minneapolis, coming to you soon -- because they're going to want to control protests a lot more than Minneapolitans will want them controlled.

"Rioting" meaning any non-republican, anywhere outside of "free speech zones" far, far away from any politicians, right? In NYC, they arrested random pedestrians for ebing on the wrong side of poorly marked blockades.

If I were living in Minneapolis, I'd make sure the press knew about how the police in NYC acted, and make use to document the inevitable abuses. I'd also try and talk with as many police representatives and see how they react to being ordered to help violate people's constitional rights.

I was thinking more in terms of police beating up on people exercising their first-amendment rights.

We still have first-amendment rights during states of emergency, or Republican National Conventions? News to me.

That's because you were in NY for the last convention. People who weren't there or didn't read carefully about it don't understand. (I wasn't there. My boss was acting as legal backup for the demonstrators, so I heard some pretty graphic stories.)

Throw whatever you can afford at any less sleazy opposition party. It shouldn't be dificult. Only the KKK is slightly more sleazy, and at least they're honest.

Don't hold back...tell us how you REALLY feel!

Still, my sympathies. But we survived them in New York.

Oh, certainly. There's a *reason* my guitar case has a sticker on it that says "My Entire Country is a Free-Speech Zone"

To be fair, a lot of the problems caused in NYC were caused by New York's Finest rather than the Repugs.

OTOH, I really, really dislike the national party (I've voted for some local ones, but I *know* them personally)

Nah. He's pointing out that since we have plenty of warning in advance, we can figure out what we're going to do!

To be honest, though, my first reaction is the same as it was for the Superbowl...let's get out of town!

Just daydreaming here, but wouldn't it be fabulous if the mayor and the chief of police had the backbone to stand up to the RNC and announce that they'll be keeping protests in hand THEIR way, not Karl Rove's? As in, the whole damn city is a free speech zone and we're just here to keep actual violence from breaking out?

The ghost of Abbie Hoffman would smile, smile, smile....

Oh, darn. I was hoping it would be in my backyard instead, because I've never had an opportunity to protest at a national political convention and because, well, there's hurricane season.

But if it's any compensation for this, I'll be in Minneapolis Nov. 2-6, because I was invited to talk at the Minnesota Population Center the Monday after the convention. I'll probably be free most of Sunday afternoon and either Sunday evening or Monday morning.

There is some hope.....

"The Twin Cities last hosted a national convention way back in 1892. The Republicans went with President Benjamin Harrison, who later lost re-election."

Hopefully history will repeat itself, the party currently in power will lose the election, and this convention will mark the start of a steep swift sure slide into oblivion for the GOP.

I live two exits down 94 from the Xcel exit. Should I stab myself with a fork now, or later? Worse, my StepMom was a proud delegate to the last convention *gags* So she might want to stay with me. Oh, God, why do you hate me? What have I done? *snarls with Pamela*

In defense of Republicans: The current President is almost as honest as Richard Nixon, and almost as effective as James Buchanan.

Still, I would advise anyone who wants to vote for the principles the GOP claims to stand for that there are a number of minor parties more likely to follow those principles. Starting with the Communist Party USA.

Date: 2006-09-28 02:43 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lydy.livejournal.com
No. Nixon was a paragon of virtue compared with the Bush government. All he did was cover up a minor burglary and harrass people using the FBI. The Bush government is pushing us ever closer to a police state, and has completely denied both foreign prisoners and US citizens civil rights, including the right to speak to an attorney, or even one's wife to let her know that you've been arrested in the first place.

But for Christ's sake, vote for the Democrats. Who the hell cares who votes for the Communist party? If there ever was a time to start a third party, boy is this not it. Hate the Democrats all you want (though I'm rather partial to them), but please put your vote somewhere which will _defeat_ a Republican. Save the bitching at the Democrats until we're not being raped. Kind of like not bitching out the police while they're busy saving you, even if you're active in the anti-police brutality movement.

Couldn't agree more...

I sympathize completely with the way you feel. My only consolation is that I won't be there to have to see it or deal with it. When I heard the news that the place I have always, and still do, consider home, was going to host the RN Convention I wanted to vomit too. Every day is a study in disgust as I/we watch the slime and sleaze ooze to the surface, as more and more of the freedoms and rights we are guaranteed under the constitution are eroded, as the world comes to think of the US and us in increasingly frightened and frightening terms. The rest of the world knows only too well how quickly regimes like Hitler's and others can come to power. Come to power through the "will" of the people, not through a violent overthrow of the government. When are "we" going to wake up?
