My husband David has made a photo documentary of some of the art and graffiti that appeared on boarded-up windows after the protests against the killing of George Floyd began.

You can see all the photos on the website. There's also an ebook, I think intended mostly for tablets, and a paper book, both available via Amazon.

Here is the website:

Many of these images are very beautiful. Almost all of them probably have the potential to be disturbing because of what the art arose from and commemorates, but they are aftermath. The ones I have extreme trouble looking at are those of the remnants of Uncle Hugo's Science Fiction Bookstore, which was burned to the ground and fell into its own basement. You can still tell that it was a bookstore, crammed and overflowing with new and used books. It was one of two independent sf bookstores in Minneapolis, a fixture among book lovers, the first place I ever did an autographing session. This tragedy is not as deep as death, but it is very difficult.

Here is a link to the fundraiser. Don doesn't really know how much money he'll need to rebuild, whether he can do so on the site or should move elsewhere, whether he should consider moving to a mail-order business at his home, or what. But Uncle Hugo's in some form can rise again.

The Midway neighborhood in St. Paul was also burned and damaged. Here's a page with a list of donation links at the bottom:

And here is a link for Black Visions Collective:

I didn't make this post to get your money for these causes. I thought people might want to look at the photos on the website. But very often people do want to know what they can do. So there are a few options.

I'm sorry I haven't posted in so long. I have plans for several posts.

In the meantime, I wanted to mention that on this Saturday, September 21st, we are having a large party to celebrate David's 65th birthday and (a little early) the 50th anniversary of his becoming a programmer.

The party will be at the old Minicon hotel, now the Doubletree Minneapolis South, in Bloomington on Normandale Boulevard. David has rented a suite on the 8th floor of the short tower (not the main tower). It's currently called the Presidential Suite, but some people will remember it as the Minneapolis in '73 suite from the days of the large Minicons.

The party starts at 6 p.m. and will certainly go quite late.

There has been much cooking and there is going to be much baking in preparation for this extravaganza. If you like bringing things to parties, anything special would be lovely, but we don't need the basics. Sometimes we do! It's excellent when we mess up and don't have enough chips, for people to bring some. But that won't be an issue this time. Please note that if you have specific dietary requirements, then bringing what you need, regardless of whether it's special or basic, is definitely fine. We'll have some vegan and gluten-free stuff, but there is room for more, as well as for food fitting other requirements.

David emailed many people about this party quite a while ago, and has been documenting preparations on his Facebook page, but I recently talked to someone who hadn't heard about it, so I thought I'd make a post.

If you know either of us and want to come to a big party, please do.

The party is also a meeting of the Minnesota Science Fiction Society, but since we are terrible at evangelizing, you don't need to worry about that.

If you have any questions, I'll do my best to answer them.

Pamela

ETA actual date of the party, good grief, and thanks to lcohen for the heads-up.
