Points of Departure, Pat Wrede's and my Liavek collection, comprising all of our original Liavek stories plus a new one from Pat and a new collaboration from both of us, is officially out! Or, as the kids apparently say these days, Live for Sale! If you have already pre-ordered, you should be seeing your book soon. If you want a paper book rather than an e-book, both Barnes and Noble and Amazon can oblige you with one.

I am seriously impressed and deeply pleased with Diversion Books, which did a stupendous job at every stage.

ETA: In comments, Brooks says that his local independent bookstore is able to order it for him, so if you prefer to support local independent stores, ask them about it.

This is my first publication since 2008, which should give me pause for serious reflection; but, on beginning to reflect, I think I'll go clean the bathroom instead.

Mine popped up yesterday morning. When I was in school there was a mobile library that used to show up in the car park on Tuesdays, with all the things I'd Interlibrary loaned that had come, and if not then at least books. (People who think books are infinite and have never read all of a library sometimes ask me why I have read Ivy Compton Burnett, or Miss Read, or David Lodge.) Anyway, until I had an e-reader I'd never been aware of the way new books are released, for no reason, on Tuesdays. I'd know there was a release date, but when I'd be able to get it was another thing. But now Tuesdays are magic book day again, and in thr same random promise way, because I order things and totally forget when they're due, and I wake up on Tuesday mornings and have emails from Amazon telling me I should connect and download exciting things today.

When I get the paper book, should I shelve it with Casting Fortune?

Oh, yes, we had bookmobiles too, and they were very exciting even though I never lived all that far from a standard library. But transportation was sometimes a problem when I was small, and with the bookmobile, it came to you, and it smelled just like the library, and it was somehow more child-sized.

Having gone right through several school libraries and through permitted sections of larger ones, I am not remotely surprised at the authors you've read.

I felt that the release date for an e-book had to be pretty notional, even more so than for a paper book, when copies are so often available well beforehand. But it didn't stop me feeling very excited when I got my own email from the publisher. And I had failed to imagine its popping up in people's email boxes like that. I'm so glad Tuesdays are magical again.

I think next to Casting Fortune would be an awesome place to shelve it. If I ever manage to finish it, my Liavek novel should go on the other side.

Other people find my shelving "system" somewhat opaque. Most don't really understand the "Minneapolis authors" section.

A large part of my library was seriously randomized a couple of years ago, when a couple of teenagers moved a bunch of books around to make room for my girlfriend's stuff. I had expected that they would move shelves of books, retaining their order. I still find it extremely stressful to have to search for books from those areas. They didn't even keep together the groups of books by single authors; things were just shoved in wherever they would fit. And though the intention was to make room for more books, they took sections that had been double-shelved and single-shelved everything. <*gritting teeth*> I will never again allow anyone to reorganize my library without some very clear instructions.

I just got a note from amazon.ca that they now have an expected delivery date: between June 1^st and 5^th.

My experience is that such notifications have very little relationship to items' actual arrival.

Oh, excellent!

I've had one or two minor catastrophes from following this idea, but on the whole it seems that Amazon under-promises and over-performs. When I believed them, I didn't really much enjoy the whiplash from "Argh, it will be so late for So-and-So's birthday!" to "It's Heeeere!" Now I am just agnostic about their assertions until the thing has shipped.

I was reminded that I hadn't looked at your LiveJournal—I am out of the habit of logging in, really, so I haven't looked at anyone's, but I try to remember to cruise by the journals of authors who AFAIK have no other online presence—by a post on tumblr (http://muspec.tumblr.com/post/126026500578). (I instinctively thought "But Lattimore is a terrible plodder!" despite never having actually read his translation.)

Anyway I read this post and started gasping with delight. Congratulations and also, I am so pleased to hear that Going North is in a position to move forward.

Your reaction to the tumblr post made me laugh and laugh. I've never actually seen that edition; I had a trade paperback with some kind of stylized Greek vase on it, I think. It's around here somewhere.

Lattimore is great when you have the rhythm of the Greek firmly in your head, as when you are using the Lattimore as a crib for impossible passages. But just to read in English, eeehhh, not so much.
