Ahead and behind
Jun. 6th, 2003 04:22 pmTwo hundred sixty words yesterday, and I am very smug because the conversation is finished.
Otherwise not very productive. They keep turning up the gravity. My theory is that my drugs are working a bit too well but not enough too well to allow the dosage to be cut. More exercise, more weight loss, or more dietary change ought to result in one of those phone calls where I say, "My blood pressure is 95 over 65 and YES I'M DIZZY," to which the response should be, "Cut this or that dosage in half." But I'm not there yet.
Eric came over on Wednesday and helped me cook potatoes with spinach, sweet potatoes with cinnamon and cardamom, curried cauliflower, and curried eggplant. It was a very pleasant conversation at dinner, too. He also did some stuff for me in the yard. Most amusingly, he is helping me get rid of the buckthorn. I told him there was one hiding in the shade of the neighbors' huge lilac bush, which overhangs part of the back yard. He told me to come out and admire how large it was. When I did, I saw that he had removed a young tree of a buckthorn that I had not even known was there, rather than the small one-branch bush I was referring to. It's sneaky stuff.
Have been getting extra time at home during the week, since midweek dates don't work with E's schedule. I miss him, but I don't mind the extra time with David and Raphael and the cats.
The Henry Kelsey is blooming madly; about half its buds are open. The parts where it goes over the rose arches are very pretty indeed. But somebody has got to turn down the gravity so I can weed.
Raphael and I have been watching episodes of CSI. My absolute favorite to date is the one with the airplane.
I'm rereading Dorothy Sayers. It's partly truepenny's fault.
And I need to update the report on Afton. Eric reminded me that we heard rustling in the grass and a sound remarkably like clucking chickens, at about the same time we saw the deer.

Date: 2003-06-06 03:18 pm (UTC)Cut about 2 1/2 pounds of sweet potatoes into chunks, after peeling them.
Put in pan, cover with water, add 1/4 t turmeric,
stir to disperse tumeric, bring to a boil, cook
until tender but not quite soft. Drain.
Cut up three onions into smallish bits.
Heat 4 T of oil in a large skillet, or in the pot you boiled the potatoes in if it seems like that'll work.
When the oil is hot, put in the onions, a 3-inch cinnamon stick, a couple of dried red peppers, and two whole pods of cardamom.
After a minute or two, put in the onions and cook them over low heat until very soft and slightly brown. Add sweet potatoes. Salt to taste. Cook until sweet potatoes are at a preferred softness, possibly adding water to prevent sticking.

Date: 2003-06-06 06:35 pm (UTC)I might also have a slight crush on the guy who plays Warrick on the show. Can't be helped. (I like the rest of the cast too, but don't find them quite as, um, dreamy).

Date: 2003-06-08 03:43 pm (UTC)Please tell Lisa that I like her recaps too, and that Raphael and I find "TMI-cam" both amusing and very useful. What more could one wish in a coinage?
I think it's really a great show. I love all the characters and I love the geekiness and sometimes the plots are almost as tight and twisty as "Law and Order"'s. Other times they are not, but, oh, well.

Date: 2003-06-08 04:05 pm (UTC)Right there with ya. We recently saw the s3 episode "Fight Night," which has lovely Warricksploitation values -- he makes a classical reference and then promptly strips to his undershirt to show off his muscles. Mens sana in corpore sano, indeed.
Gil's my favorite character as character, though.
I love the recaps; I'll miss them if TWOP really shuts down.

Date: 2003-06-08 06:15 pm (UTC)I'm also impressed by Marg Helgenberger-- I loved her when she was on China Beach, but that was a very different type of role. It was a showy part at times, whereas C.S.I. really requires, um . . . the opposite. Need to underplay in a way (not that they haven't given Catherine her share of personal drama). I like the friendships between Catherine and Gil, and Catherine and Warrick in particular.
