I'd call this a Writing Update
Jul. 14th, 2003 04:24 pm-- but it's a bit vague and meandering for that. I have just reread The Dubious Hills. I don't believe I've done that since it was first published in hardcover, though I probably dipped into it extensively when the paperback came out.
I quite enjoyed it. I couldn't even remember how I'd solved all the problems. But good heavens, I have NO FUCKING CLUE how I DID that, and now I am proposing, not exactly to do it again, but to do something probably as difficult. I must be out of my mind.
Work is proceeding on the Liavek novel, and I'm getting a stronger and stronger feeling that it will be a good idea to write the two in tandem, because otherwise I will simply despair of the Hills/Whim sequel (presently, in a fit of uninspiration, called "North,", that being the direction everybody is going at the moment).
I'm really enjoying my new characters in the Liavek novel. I was worried about them and whether I'd do them justice, and about having so many viewpoints, but I am quite won over. They have terrifying philosophical discussions with no prompting whatsoever. I can't wait to introduce them to some of the pre-existing characters. *evil chuckle*
I've been having a lot of early-morning wakefulness recently, and I don't think it's due to drugs or hormones; I think it's due to having finances to fret about. Feh. Well, if I write enough long enough I'll have something to sell somebody.

Sequels
Date: 2003-07-14 07:38 pm (UTC)I think the bad sequels to good books come from writers confident they know exactly what they did right, and can do it again. Or who've realized that the first story was insufficiently feminist/libertarian/etc. and are determined not to make that mistake again.

I told Zorinth you may be working on the sequel, but I fear his response would be too loud for your peace.

If I'm right that this book wants to be written in tandem with the Liavek novel, it may not take as long as I feared. We'll have to see.
