The leaves of the Norway maples have turned yellow

The leaves of the Norway maples that line our street turn yellow only every four or five years. It takes a long, mild fall to cause them to show their colors. Most years, they just shrug off their green leaves in November, a botanical eye-roll at Minnesota weather.

The sky is peach-colored above their warm yellow. Along either side of the street is a long, brilliant, precise aisle of fallen leaves.

The weather radio is yammering. "The National Weather Service in the Twin Cities has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Hennepin County in East Central Minnesota until 6:15 p.m. Central Daylight Time. ... The National Weather Service in the Twin Cities has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Isanti County in East Central Minnesota. ... The National Weather Service in the Twin Cities has issued a tornado warning for Isanti County in East Central Minnesota. ... The National Weather Service in the Twin Cities has issued a tornado warning for Polk County in Northwest Wisconsin until 6:30 p.m. Central Daylight Time. ... "

It's two days before Halloween.

But the leaves of the Norway maples have turned yellow.

In the foggy sunlight of the mid morning, the trees were stunning. Even the oaks around this building looked burnished.

Well, remember, in a bad year, that's what we have here too. Though a strange effect of global warming seems to be to have lengthened the former interim seasons, so spring takes longer than a weekend.

Reading that post about Minneapolis, a place I've only visited online, made me strongly homesick for Lothlorien, a place I've only visited in books.

I hope the weather won't be too bad/dangerous.

It's not just you. I can hardly see one yellow leaf, let alone an aisle of them, without thinking of Tolkien and of the mallorn. Eric, when he was here, kept saying, "Lasselenta" to me, though I think I have spelled it wrong.

We have an enormous, nigh perfect Norway maple across the street from our house that we worship. It was blustery and warm today, and I so I sat on my front porch and watched the wind send yellow leaves flying down the street. On a street near us, the maples on both sides arch and meet in the middle. With all the leaves on the street, it felt like I was walking through the branches of the tree, with magnificent drifts of leaves on lawns, cars, portches, and in the air. The sun was out for the first time in days, making the leaves glow even more.

We get one day like this, if we're lucky. It was lovely.
